After being closed for about six months due to the coronavirus, India’s tourist attraction, the Taj Mahal, has reopened.

The northern city of Agra, home to the architectural wonder of the seventeenth century, came into action when the Archaeological Service of India (ASI) opened the emblematic monument to visitors.

The Taj and the adjacent Agra Fort closed tourists from March 17 due to the closure of Covid-19.

Precautions and rules issued through the city administration and ASI supply for a maximum of 5,000 tourists who can enter the monument. In Agra Fort, the maximum is set at 2500.

“We were careful to open. Yesterday, 1,230 other people visited the Taj and everything went well,” Vasant Kumar from ASI told RFI.

“There will be no sale of price tickets at the ticket office. Visitors can scan the code to purchase price tickets or eBooks online from the ASI online page or mobile app. “

The Taj Mahal will welcome visitors in two spaces: before lunch and after lunch. In the niche, there will be a maximum of 2500 visitors. The official photographers of the monument were divided into teams to be able to enter both one day and another.

The remarkable white marble mausoleum that houses the tombs of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal attracts 7 to 8 million visitors a year.

Since closing, stakeholders, such as tour operators, hotels and restaurants, have had to close their stores due to the pandemic.

“The economy of the city is connected to the Taj and finally there is some relief for all those whose profits have suffered. It will take some time to get back to normal, but the good news is that it has opened up,” Agra district justice said. prabhu Singh told RFI.

Most of the heritage monuments protected through the ASI were closed by the pandemic and began opening in early July when restrictions began to decrease. Nearly 3,700 monuments have been opened across the country with the exception of the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort.

It is the first time since the Indo-Pakistani Wars in 1965 and 1971 when the Taj Mahal closed to the public.

The site, one of the seven new wonders of the world, is located on the coast of Yamuna and is still on the itinerary of visiting heads of state.

U. S. President Donald Trump and first Melania Trump visited the mausoleum, built as a monument to love, in February, accompanied by their daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner.
