Syphilis in Japan surpasses 10,000 this year for first time since 1999

More than 10,000 more people in Japan have contracted syphilis this year, a point reached for the first time since comparable data was available in 1999, according to an initial report by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases on Tuesday.

The record backlog of cases, which rose from around 1,000 in 2013 and 2014 to an all-time low of less than 8,000 in 2021 and the most recent figure of 10,141, is believed to be partly due to the backlog in social media use.
