VIENNA (Reuters) – A domain in northern Switzerland, near the border with Germany, will be proposed to host a deep nuclear waste project that is expected to begin structuring in 2045, Switzerland’s Federal Energy Office (BFE) said on Saturday.
The so-called deep geological repository for spent nuclear fuel and other radioactive waste has yet to be approved by the government and parliament, a procedure that will take years.
The project company, the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra), created through nuclear power plant operators and the government, plans to propose the domain north of Laegern, north of Zurich and near the border with Germany, BFE said spokeswoman Marianne Zuend.
A press conference will be held on Monday to announce the proposed venue, he added.
“This is just an announcement of where they (Nagra) would like to build,” Zuend said, adding that the BFE oversees the process. “All the main points will now need to be resolved through Nagra to incorporate them into the official application. “they will be presented in about two years to the authorities. “
