Sweden’s leading coronavirus expert refuses to introduce masks for the general population, saying that dressing up with them is ”very dangerous’ because it gives other people the concept that they should be in crowded rooms or public transport.
Anders Tegnell, a leading epidemiologist at the Swedish Public Health Agency, expressed skepticism that the mask covers the Covid-19 epidemics.
The infectious disease expert, who refused to stick to European governments during the closure in March, also noted that countries where compliance with the masks was widespread, such as Belgium and Spain, were still experiencing an increase in Covid’s cases.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Dr. Tegnell said, “It’s very damaging that that mask is a game changer for Covid-19.
The face mask can complement other things when other pieces are placed safely. But starting with a mask and then thinking you can crowd your buses or buy grocery stores, it’s a mistake.
Dr. Tegnell has in the past ruled out the possibility of requiring Swedes to wear a mask and described evidence of its effectiveness as “surprisingly weak.”
