The permit application incurs a minimum payment of $67 for the establishment. Currently, property owners can lose their liquor license and business license if police officers pass by and notice that a place is allowed to let consumers dance.

“It is not moderate for the state for people to dance,” Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer said in a government statement. “By removing the requirement for a dance permit, we are also reducing bureaucracy and prices for contractors and others who organize dances. “
Swedish media welcomed the resolution to abolish dance permits, which they called obsolete and moralistic.

The government has proposed that the replacement take effect on July 1, seeking parliamentary approval.
In 2016, the Swedish parliament voted unanimously to abolish permits, but the requirement still exists in law and is enforced. Swedish broadcaster SVT said that for the past 20 years, lawmakers from all social democratic parties have pushed for the abolition of permits.
