Fisheries and aquaculture are among the oldest and most vital sectors of the Omani economy and are of great cultural and social importance. Before the discovery of oil in the 1960s, 80% of the population made their living from agriculture and fishing. Currently, the fishery is not economically productive. Many fishermen do not fish full-time and, despite gigantic subsidies, their remuneration is low.
There is a need to control the fisheries sector economically and to create viable and sustainable employment opportunities. As a starting point, the Sultanate has engaged the World Bank to lend a hand in its efforts to reform the fisheries sector and expand a plan. to increase the contribution of fisheries to Oman’s economy.
This review provides an overview of collaborative efforts involving the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAFW), the World Bank (WB), and stakeholders in the fisheries sector. The collaborative cadres laid the rigorous groundwork for the advancement and implementation of the 2040 Vision for Fisheries and Aquaculture: “To create a successful, environmentally sustainable and world-class sector that is a net contributor to Oman’s economy. “Vision 2040 and the accompanying implementation plan set out a framework and processes to achieve those goals.
Preparatory work culminated in the Sultanate of Oman’s Vision 2040 for Fisheries and Aquaculture; the Fisheries and Aquaculture Vision Implementation Plan; and a proposed investment allocation document. The next step includes the implementation of the pilot investment allocation and technical support, as well as stakeholder co-management of 4 pilot fisheries.
This strategy points to a brighter future for the fishing of higher value-added species. Phase II, the first five years of the Vision 2040 put into effect, will identify the policy and capacity to implement the most productive practices globally in the fisheries sector. through organizational progression, business progression, and control training, as well as planning for new facilities built around key stakeholders.
