Police in northwestern Pakistan arrested at least 55 suspects Wednesday after a bomb attack on an Islamic killed eight academics the day before.
The arrests were made near the seminary in Peshawar city and the suspects were questioned, police officer Mohlat Shah said.
A hard bomb exploded in the main hall of the school, where many academics were taking the Qur’aan categories early in the morning after a guy left a bag full of explosives.
Police were examining the surveillance camera and interviewing witnesses to identify and arrest the man, Officer Shah said.
The six of the nearly 140 injured academics have been discharged from the hospital, said Mohamed Asim Khan, spokesman for the city’s largest Lady Reading Hospital.
Police and intelligence agencies believed that the seminary leader, Sheikh Rahimuddin Haqqani, could be just a target.
Haqqani, a 42-year-old cleric from the Afghan city of Jalalabad who has already survived two assassination attempts, allegedly close to the Afghan Taliban and target of rival extremist organization Islamic State.
Police amassed all forensic evidence at the site of the attack and are investigating whether there is an Islamic State fingerprint, Resources said.
Pakistan officially denies the presence of the Afghan Taliban in the country, however, the group’s leaders have been killed in gun attacks in the cities of Quetta and Peshawar.
