Study: inflamed newborn with Covid-19 in the uterus with neurological complications

A pregnant woman inflamed with the new coronavirus in her last trimester caused the virus to spread through the placenta to her unborn child, causing neurological headaches in babies a few days after birth, according to an examination published Tuesday in Nature Communications.

French researchers discovered evidence that the virus passed the placenta to infect the fetus in the womb, as the placenta showed symptoms of inflammation consistent with Covid-19 and contained a more potent viral load than in the mother’s or child’s blood.

The mother admitted in March with a severe cough and fever, and after bathing through a C-section, she tested positive for the virus.

Three days after birth, the baby developed symptoms such as irritability and muscle spasms, and after 11 days, researchers observed lesions of the white substance in the brain.

After a slow recovery, the baby graduated from the hospital after 18 days and the researchers noted that after two months, the child’s physical condition continued to improve, adding relief in neurological injuries.

“Other cases of prospective perinatal transmission have recently been reported, but there have been several unresolved problems,” the researchers wrote. “For example, some failed to stumble upon [Covid-19] in newborns or only reported the presence of express antibodies; others discovered the virus in newborn samples but the route of transmission is not transparent as the placenta, the amniotic fluid.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report last June that pregnant women may be at increased risk of severe Covid-19 symptoms.

According to Johns Hopkins University, there are 13203,571 demonstrated cases of coronavirus worldwide, with the United States leading with 3,407,798. There are also 575201 reported deaths, with the United States also leading with 136252.

The long-term effects of Covid-19 are not yet fully known, however, others who have the virus report persistent symptoms. In addition, most patients hospitalized in an examination conducted in Spain reported some type of neurological symptom, adding headaches, dizziness and impaired consciousness.

While other people assume that Covid-19’s contraction makes it immune to infection in the future, new studies at King’s College London on Monday suggest that antibodies may lose their potency after a few weeks.
