LA PAZ (Reuters) – Thousands more people in Bolivia began an indefinite strike on Saturday in the town of Santa Cruz, a major agricultural export hub, to protest the postponement of a population and housing census that delays obtaining more economic resources.
A death reported by the police in clashes between other people who accepted the strike and those who tried to reject it. Television news footage showed several roads blocked, streets and markets empty, and businesses closed.
The effects of the census are for the distribution of economic resources and the definition of seats in the Bolivian parliament.
The head of the Bolivian committee for census publicity, Vicente Cuellar, said 2024 and 2025 would be “opportune” to conduct the census because of elections scheduled for 2025.
Lawmakers called for calm and agreed to continue talks until an agreement is reached that prevents indefinite strikes.
According to official estimates, Bolivia has about 12 million inhabitants, about 3. 3 million in Santa Cruz.
Santa Cruz is the bastion of the Bolivian economy and is the main manufacturer of livestock and agriculture, known for the production of soybeans, sunflower, sugar cane, corn, rice and wheat.
