Stora Enso’s Skutskär launches a pilot project for biogenic CO2 capture, a pioneering climate action

(BRIEF) Stora Enso’s Skutskär biomaterials production facility in Sweden, known for its sustainable practices, has embarked on an innovative pilot task to capture biogenic CO2 emissions from pulp production, marking a vital step towards climate-positive operations. With its commitment to reducing environmental impact, the site has not used fossil fuels for five years, instead relying on biofuels for power, heat and power generation. This pilot task, which is part of the EU-funded ACCSESS task, is pioneering the installation of CO2 capture apparatus in a recovery boiler, with the aim of expanding cost-effective carbon capture generation at scale. While technical testing is ongoing, the task demonstrates Stora Enso’s commitment to achieving its purpose of providing 100 percent regenerative products and responses by 2050, with Skutskär leading the way. (PRESS RELEASE) HELSINKI, April 29, 2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Stora Enso’s biomaterials production facility in Skutskär, central Sweden, focuses on the production of flake pulp for absorbent products such as diapers and other daily hygiene products, as well as the production of cutting-edge biomaterials from all portions of a tree. The site has a long history of reducing the environmental footprint of its operations and products, and for the past five years, the Skutskär biomaterials production site has not used fossil fuels in its operations. The next step towards climate-positive operations in Skutskär is the launch of a pilot task to capture biogenic CO2 from pulp production.

Already today, all energy, heat and electrical energy produced on the planet is based on biofuels. The recently introduced pilot task captures CO2 emissions from these biofuels and is the first task in the world to install a CO2 capture apparatus in a recovery boiler in a pulp production complex. CO2 at scale and help society achieve net-zero emissions and minimize global warming.

“We have managed to phase out the use of fossil fuels at our biomaterials production site. In the next step, we are very excited to be part of the ACCSESS task and the carbon capture team, to further investigate the possibilities of reducing the environmental footprint of our operations and products,” says Christer Nordstrand, Production Manager at Stora Enso in Skutskär. site.

In order for a large-scale carbon capture facility to be viable in the long term, there are some technical issues that need to be evaluated very well as a component of the ACCSESS task. Also, whether the captured carbon will be stored or used in the long term. It will feature many topics that are still open. At the Skutskär production site, the chemical and energy integration components of the biogenic carbon price chain are being tested, the storage or use of the captured carbon is not part of this task. The pilot task at the Skutskär site aims to achieve two tons of carbon captured per day, and one of the goals is to run the pilot only at low site temperature with natural waste heat.

Stora Enso has an ambitious goal of providing 100 percent regenerative products and answers by 2050. As Europe’s largest flake pulp manufacturer, the biomaterials production plant in Skutskär is paving the way for carbon-negative products.
