Actions against China have been most competitive in Republican-controlled states, where Beijing is blamed for problems ranging from fentanyl-related deaths and factory closures to last year’s balloon overflights and the Covid-19 pandemic. State lawmakers say the good fortune of policies in the federal point will likely depend on the level of Republican success in the November election.
When the Iowa state Senate passed a bill this month to make it harder for pesticide brands to file lawsuits if their product labels meet federal precautionary requirements, others involved in the process said a particular clause was included to bolster the legislation: “The bill does not apply to a product manufactured through a Chinese state-owned enterprise,” the text states.
Florida has legislated one of the most ambitious decoupling measures from China. During his presidential campaign last year, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law to prevent land purchases, block state contracts, and school partnerships involving Chinese nationals. He called the package “a style for other states. “
