Top state public fitness officials remind Mainers that each and every family can request rapid, loose COVID-19 testing and inspire others to take inventory before the holidays.
Maine families can get five immediate loose home tests directly in the mail per month through Project Access COVID Tests, or Project ACT, a partnership between the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and the Rockefeller Foundation.
The ACT allocation has sent about 855,000 checks, about 170,900 check kits, since the program was introduced in January.
“Testing, along with vaccination and other common-sense precautions, helps keep our families and communities safe this season of travel and encounters,” said DHHS Commissioner Jeanne Lambrew and Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Nirav Shah.
Since the pandemic began, Maine has recorded 300,228 COVID-19 cases and 2,717 deaths Thursday. The number of cases reflects only laboratory-confirmed cases and is likely to be undercounted with the now widespread availability of at-home testing. Maine’s higher vaccination rates along with asymptomatic cases means it’s very likely that many other people didn’t realize they had COVID.
Over the past two months, young people in particular have been severely affected by the spread of other respiratory viruses, such as RSV and influenza. Maine has recorded more than 430 laboratory-confirmed flu cases, 12 flu-associated hospitalizations, and one flu-related hospitalization. death so far this season, according to the Maine CDC’s latest weekly flu surveillance report. More than two hundred new cases were recorded in the week ending Nov. 12 alone, according to the report.
