MONTEBELLO—The Cathedral of the Holy Cross will celebrate its 100th anniversary this year with a series of celebrations under the auspices of Western Prelate Bishop Torkom Donoyan.
To start the birthday parties, a night service is scheduled for Saturday, September 10 with the blessing of incense and crosses at 7 p. m. The birthday party will continue on Sunday, September 11 at 11 a. m. with the official Divine Liturgy; Madagh’s blessing; Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and feast dinner of the so-called Cathedral of the Holy Cross.
This is an exclusive opportunity for the Armenian network in Los Angeles to come together to celebrate the cathedral’s centennial. The church served as a safe haven for many immigrants and their families who came to this country in search of freedom while maintaining a connection to their heritage.
Founded a hundred years ago on 20th Street in the center of the then-Armenian community in present-day downtown Los Angeles, Holy Cross served as a non-secular anchor for Armenians who were slowly gathering in Southern California. Today, the church, which moved in the 1980s to the city of Montebello and identified as a cathedral, is the religious home of thousands of Armenian Americans throughout Southern California.
The celebrations will culminate with a banquet, scheduled for September 24, presided over by the Prelate.
The network invited participation on those occasions as it celebrated a centenary of non-secular service to the Armenian network.
Banquet tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available. Preferential seating available. For more information, contact the church workplace at (323) 727-1113.
