Spain’s top folk festival and top sensible artists, led by Coldplay, perform as live music continues to thrive

LIVE music concerts and festivals in Spain in 2023 recorded a 26% increase in turnover, or almost €579 million.

The figures come from Friday’s presentation of the Live Music Yearbook by the Association of Music Promoters (APM).

The music industry broke the previous record of €459 million recorded in 2022 and has been developing since 2014, except for the Covid pandemic years.

The president of the MPA, Albert Salmerón, said: “We do not believe that there is a bubble and on the contrary we believe that there is still a long way to go. “

“Live music has a playful modality and access to culture that has become normalized compared to 10 years ago and the sector is evolving organically and progressively year after year. “

The APM revealed that the Arenal Sound festival in Burriana (Castellón) was the highest-grossing festival last year, attracting a total of 300,000 people during its six days.

It is followed by Primavera Sound Barcelona (243,000 in five days) and Viña Rock, in the town of Villarobledo, in the province of Albacete (240,000 in 4 days).

The three-day Mad Cool 2023 attracted an additional 202,000 people to Madrid, while the four-day Beniccasim International Festival in Castellón attracted 180,000 music lovers.

By autonomous communities, ticket sales prices were given in Madrid, Andalusia and especially in Catalonia, which hosted numerous concerts in stadiums of big names such as Coldplay, Bruce Springsteen or Beyoncé, which represented 26. 35% of the national turnover.

Albert Salmerón said: “Last year was unique, because so many tours piled up after the pandemic pause and we think there may still be a drop in ticket prices, but it’s not.

Coldplay attracted the highest number of visitors, with 4 concerts attracting over 221,000 people.

They were followed by Harry Styles (120,000 in two shows) and Bruce Springsteen (115,850 in two shows).

The greatest success of the Spanish live group Manuel Carrasco, which brought together more than 365,000 people in 28 concerts, ahead of Melendi (308,000 spectators in 37 concerts).

In terms of venues, the Marenostrum Fuengirola in Malaga recorded the overall attendance (189,000 people in 33 nights), followed by the Noches del Botánico in Madrid (more than 152,000 in forty-five nights) and the Noches del Malecón in Murcia (131,000 in 44 concerts).
