MADRID (AP) — The Spanish government has seized 11 tons of cocaine and arrested 20 other people in two separate operations against smuggling illegal drugs inside shipping containers, Spain’s national police said Tuesday.
Police said 7,500 kilograms of cocaine seized by officials in the northwestern city of Vigo were hidden among pieces of frozen tuna. Investigators said one criminal organization was a frozen seafood company as a front for importing drugs from South America to Spain.
Another operation carried out by the police in the Mediterranean town of Valencia resulted in the seizure of 3,400 kilograms of cocaine discovered in the double bottoms of transport boxes in the port of the eastern town.
Police revealed the exact dates of the operation, saying only that it had been carried out recently. They claimed that both networks were connected to criminal organizations in the Balkan region.
