Amy MacIver explained to Professor Emeritus of Virology Barry Schoub why she believes South Africa is preparing for another wave of COVID-19.
• South Africans will have to prepare for a new wave of COVID-19 infections in late September or early October.
• This will be the sixth wave of coronavirus infection in South Africa.
• Experts have predicted that this wave will be severe due to increased immunity.
Schoub explained that the first occurrence of COVID-19 in 2019/2020, the virus is no longer new or unknown in the clinical community.
He added that the virus is less severe and threatens hospital operations as in the past.
However, Schoub warns that COVID-19 remains highly transmissible, helping him expect that wave to resurface by the end of September.
We can probably be waiting for the wave to hit us on overdue dates [September] or October.
On the other hand, it spreads faster. . . it is inherently more transmissible, it spreads more easily.
Schoub explained that due to the increased immunity of the population, the next wave will most likely be less severe.
COVID-19 will never pass, eventually equating to a cold, he said.
He encouraged those who are not vaccinated, especially the elderly, to take credit for themselves.
