South African restaurants launch massive protest against COVID-19 rules

South African restaurants held wednesday the demonstration in the history of the country’s restaurant industry to highlight its heavy losses due to Covid-19’s strict measures.

According to the South African Restaurant Association (RASA), which is leading the campaign, only about 400,000 jobs can be lost due to the government’s austere rules of closure.

Under the slogan “Millions of street seats,” restaurants across the country peacefully moved tables and chairs in front of their establishments.

“Mr. President, we invite you to take an empty seat,” it reads on the official poster of the RASA Crusade, hoping to interact with President Cyril Ramaphosa in a debate about his fate.

The restaurant had symptoms that said “We will starve, not virus” and shouted slogans, adding “Jobs save lives.”

Ramaphosa has placed one of the strictest locks in the world to stop the coronavirus since late March.

Restaurants were allowed to reopen for sitting service until the end of June with limited capacity and no alcohol.

South Africa has more than 382,000 cases of coronavirus, making it the fifth most affected country in the world.
