Ireland cruised to the primaries in their bid to claim their first Rugby World Cup good fortune by beating South Africa 13-8 in a fierce encounter in Paris. In what promises to be the tournament’s set-up so far, between two of the favorites to win the Webb Ellis Cup, Andy Farrell’s side fought back for a fatal and tense victory, leaving them as the most sensible in Group B.
Manie Libbok’s penalty was for much of the first half the only time the score was altered, but Ireland took a 7-3 lead at the break. With the protective net of a penalty lead, Ireland shot the ball wide and Mack Hansen found himself with an undeniable end. The Springboks fought back after the break, helped by the arrival of their ‘Bomb Squad’. A succession of massive scrums resulted in his first and only outing of the game, the ball locating Cheslin Kolbe, who had part of Paris. For himself as he wandered around, Libbok couldn’t turn up the extras.
Johnny Sexton, however, restored the lead for Ireland, with his penalty putting his side back in front, before the Springboks squandered two chances to respond again. Libbok and then Faf de Klerk missed penalties, and poor shots proved costly. The Irish spent a lot of the part camped in their own 22, slightly looking to keep South Africa at bay, but an infrequent attack earned them 3 valuable points. Jack Crowley, replacing Sexton, left with the simplest task in front of the posts, leaving Ireland 13th. -8 ahead heading into the last 3 minutes.
