Gomez, 42, died earlier this month of pneumonia and kidney problems. The former soldier was living with quadriplegia after a catastrophic injury while serving in Iraq just about two decades ago.

During a 2004 fighting project to capture enemy infantrymen who had fired on their base, the armored vehicle Gomez was traveling in sank into the Tigris River, causing the Illinois venue to break its spine in two places.
At a prayer service for Gomez on Monday, his circle of family and friends said Gomez maintained his sense of humor and his preference to keep learning despite serious injuries.

However, Gomez spent his final days wishing he could return to the available home he built for himself through his network of homes in Wheaton, Illinois, and asking about longtime nanny Elva Cuahquentzi, who had to return to Mexico after facing immigration issues and unable to return to the United States.

Gomez moved into a nursing home shortly after Cuahquentzi left, where he temporarily developed pneumonia that led to his death. He was buried Tuesday at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
