Now, a new study by Brazilian researchers has found that other people who do not care about compliance with measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 tend to exhibit higher degrees of characteristics similar to antisocial personality disorder, also known as sociopathy.
Published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, it explored the relationships between antisocial characteristics and compliance with COVID-19 containment measures.
“Containment measures were the most effective way to flatten the COVID-19 contamination curve. However, despite the benefits of slowing the spread of the virus, previous studies have shown that some other people are more likely to comply. those measures than others, “the researchers said.
The team studied more than 1,500 adults in Brazil, between 18 and 73 years old, who responded to the data on the DSM-5 (PID-5) personality heritage, the affective resonance of the measure. They found that latent profile analyses pointed to a two-profile solution: the antisocial-style profile that had high scores in terms of hardness, hostility, deception, impulsivity, manipulation, irresponsibility, and threat-taking.
The effects of the examination revealed that antisocial traits, which add decreasing degrees of empathy and higher degrees of hardness, deception and risk-taking, are connected to decrease compliance with COVID-19 containment measures.
“These characteristics explain, at least in part, the explanation of why other people continue not to adhere to containment measures even with an increasing number of cases and deaths,” the researchers wrote in the paper.
“Exposing yourself and others to risk, even when it can be avoided, is a typical trait of other people with antisocial tendencies and low degrees of empathy,” they added.
Simply put, the researchers found that those who scored higher on measures of callousness, deception, hostility, impulsivity, manipulation, and risk-taking tended to be less compatible with COVID-19 containment measures, adding hand washing. normal, dressed in a suit. mask in public. and practice social distancing.
