The operation was opposed by the Lion’s Den militia, which the army says planned a series of attacks on Israelis, the deadliest night of violence in the West Bank and Jerusalem since the beginning of the year. This comes a week before Israel’s fifth election since 2019.
Five other people were killed in the operation in Nablus’ Old City, and another user was killed in Ramallah city clashes with Israeli security forces, the Palestinian health government said.
“What is in Nablus is aggression and a war crime,” Nabil Abu Rudineh, spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, said in a statement, calling on the United States to intervene.
Significant escalation
The operation focused on one used through the defense force to make explosives, according to the Israel Defense Forces, and marks a significant escalation in Israel’s efforts against militants in the West Bank.
The IDF began operations earlier this year after a series of attacks that killed 19 Israelis and foreigners.
Amir Avivi, founder of the Israel Defense and Security Forum and a brigadier general, called for an even broader operation opposed to the lion’s den, but said such decisions would likely be postponed until after the election.
“The water is overflowing and we want to get the pot out of the fire, and we can’t do that without a big defensive operation,” Avivi said by phone.
More than 130 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the beginning of the year, according to Palestinian fitness authorities. Three Israeli foot soldiers were also killed after Israel began operations in the West Bank.
