Chief medical officer Sir Chris Whitty will later testify at the Covid-19 inquiry in a highly anticipated appearance.

The hearing of Sir Chris, who has become one of the country’s most recognizable figures during the pandemic, is expected to last all of Tuesday and possibly even into Wednesday.

His appearance comes a day after former scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance, a close colleague who accompanied him at coronavirus-era press briefings, presented his perspectives on former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and ministers’ handling of the pandemic.

So far, Sir Patrick’s diary entries have presented an ordinary view of his perspectives on M. Johnson, Rishi Sunak and the decisions made through politicians as the crisis unfolds.

Lady Hallett’s inquest heard on Monday that Johnson was “embarrassed” by the graphics and knowledge presented to him by the pandemic and was a “devastated” man at times.

The investigation found that Johnson struggled to retain clinical information, that he was “holding on to a straw” and at one point wondered if Covid was spreading “because of what a wonderful libertarian country we are. “

Sir Patrick’s diary also said that Sunak, then chancellor, considered it “acceptable” to “let other people die”.

Laura Trott, the principal secretary to the Treasury, did not deny that Sunak had made such comments and said so that the investigation would establish it.

“It’s going to be up to him to communicate those individual things” when he appears before the inquiry, he said Tuesday.

Highlighting the “vital” leave scheme, Trott said Sunak “has shown wonderful leadership” during the pandemic.

He also declined to say whether Sunak was a smart idea.

“This is precisely what the independent inquiry wants to examine,” the minister said.

The initiative, presented in August 2020 to reactivate restaurants and catering establishments after the lockdown, shot up again on Monday.

The inquiry has already heard that Sir Chris has spoken privately about “eating out to fight the virus”, and he will most likely face questions about this initiative later on.

His former deputy, Sir Jonathan Van-Tam, will testify later this week.
