SINGAPORE, Aug. 16 (Bernam) — Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the actual timing of his successor to Lee Hsien Loong as prime minister has not yet been decided.
Wong said this in an interview with Bloomberg News editor John Micklethwait on Aug. 15, where the full transcript of the interview was made on the Department of Finance’s website.
In response to a question from Micklethwait about when he thinks he is most likely to take office, Wong said the government has a very thorough and planned procedure for thinking about what it can do with succession planning.
“The plans were paralyzed by COVID-19. So we had to get back together, and we looked for a procedure that would allow us to be leaders and strengthen the sense of team within the firm, and we did.
“I emerged as a candidate that my colleagues chose to lead the team, I am revered for his election and now we are deliberating precisely when this transition would be for me to succeed Prime Minister Lee,” Wong explained.
Putting more emphasis on timing, Micklethwait asked if Wong expected this to happen before the 2025 general election.
Wong replied that “it’s later than 2025, it may be earlier. “
“As we have already discussed, and we discussed it in the last press conference, this can take a position before the general election, in which case he would take over as prime minister and obviously lead the PAP (People’s Action Party) and the 4G team. “(fourth generation) in elections.
“Or it may be that the prime minister continues as prime minister now and leads the PAP in the elections, and after the elections, if the PAP wins, I will succeed him as prime minister.
“These are the options, but we haven’t yet made a resolution on the actual timing,” Wong said.
Wong noted that his priority for now “is to start thinking about the organization of the team, how we might need to manage our immediate priorities and take that time to adjust to my new day-to-day jobs and expanded portfolios. “
“In due course, we will make a resolution on this issue,” he said.
The interview covered a wide variety of topics, adding Singapore’s geopolitics, global economy and economic outlook.
Wong was promoted to deputy prime minister effective June 13, 2022.
