Singapore’s cruise plan to ”no’ part increases fears of coronavirus

The global cruise industry has had to close largely due to virus-like restrictions and a series of outbreaks on overcrowded vessels.

But the Singapore Tourist Office, Asia’s main port and shipping hub, talks to cruise lines about organizing trips to and from the city-state.

Officials will put “appropriate measures in place that will allow cruise ships to resume safely,” Annie Chang, the council’s cruise director, told AFP, who did not say when cruise ships will begin.

However, Marcie Keever, director of Friends of the Earth’s ocean and ship program, warned of “Covid’s outbreaks” on cruise ships.

“The cruise has contributed greatly to Covid’s epidemics in several ports around the world,” he told the AFP.

He also warned of the environmental effect of the resumption of cruise ships.

Last week, Singapore Airlines abandoned a plan to free “flights to nowhere” from its government-affected finances following a protest over the impact of the weather.

Singapore has noticed outbreaks of viruses in overcrowded dormitories that house low-wage migrant workers, but have now largely been controlled.
