The Singapore Energy Market Authority (EMA) announced on Tuesday that it has granted conditional permission to Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd (SCU), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries Ltd, to import 1. 2 GW of low-carbon energy from Vietnam.
According to a proposal by the SCU, imported electric power will harness offshore wind power and potentially other generation bureaucracy thanks to its cooperation with the Petrovietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC).
The electricity will be transported from Vietnam to Singapore by new submarine cables that will stretch for about 1,000 kilometers.
The SCU said offshore wind farms in Vietnam could start generating electricity after 2033, adding that it will work with the PTSC to take the additional steps needed to expand this renewable energy project.
The EMA, a statutory board under Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, said conditional approval would make it less difficult for SCU to unload regulatory approvals and licenses for the project.
Earlier this year, during Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official stopover in Singapore on February 10, PTSC and SCU signed a joint progression agreement to export offshore renewable energy from Vietnam to Singapore.
Under the agreement, PTSC and SCU will jointly expand offshore wind farms in Vietnam with a total capacity of 2. 3 GW, which will be exported to Singapore’s submarine cables.
In 2021, Singapore announced plans to import GW of low-carbon electricity by 2035.
To date, the EMA has granted conditional approvals to projects from various sources, adding 2 GW from Indonesia, 1 GW from Cambodia and 1. 2 GW from Vietnam.
If those projects are carried out, total imported electricity will account for 30% of Singapore’s energy needs by 2035.
