Singapore’s Deputy Premier Lawrence Wong and Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang agreed to the move at a meeting in Tianjin that resulted in two dozen agreements ranging from food safety cooperation to enhancing an existing bilateral pact on flexible industry.

Lately, Chinese passport holders need a visa to enter the Southeast Asian city-state, while Singaporeans can travel to China for up to 15 days without a visa. Both parties aim to put this agreement into effect in early 2024.

“The relevant governments of the two countries are in close communication on this matter,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a regular news briefing in Beijing. “This will be news for both peoples and we hope that this agreement will be implemented as soon as possible. “

Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry said the city-state would “ensure greater market access” for China’s facilities sector by enhancing the bilateral flexible industry agreement.

Beijing has also pledged to impose limits on foreign capital for Singaporean investors in 22 sectors, adding construction services, retail and wholesale, architecture and urban planning, the Ministry of Commerce said.

Wong’s vacation in China also included talks with Premier Li Qiang and Vice Premier He Lifeng. The agreements reached on Thursday came as Singaporean Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen met with his U. S. counterpart Lloyd Austin at the Pentagon to discuss cooperative tactics, the Singapore government. he said in a separate statement.

China has moved to shore up investor confidence and unleash a flurry of market access concessions since Chinese leader Xi Jinping met President Joe Biden in the US last month. Steps have included approving a long-delayed Mastercard Inc. joint venture, and announcing visa-free access to China for six countries.

Wong will visit the city-state’s largest trading partner through Friday. Last year, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong named Wong as his successor, and the transition of force before the next election is expected to take place until November 2025. Lee said the transition may be as early as next year.
