SHANGHAI: China’s Shanghai mall on Saturday began a series of mass COVID-19 tests for nearly all of its 25 million citizens as the government seeks to involve an outbreak linked to a popular beauty salon, while Beijing has reported a spike in cases.
Over the weekend, authorities ordered PCR tests for all citizens of 15 of Shanghai’s 16 districts, and five districts banned citizens from leaving their homes during the trial period.
The new tests come just 10 days after the city lifted a grueling two-month lockdown aimed at getting rid of the community spread of Covid-19.
On Saturday, Shanghai reported seven new symptomatic local cases the previous day, six of which were detected outside quarantine areas.
The city also recorded nine new local asymptomatic cases, up from six the day before.
Underscoring the challenge of implementing China’s Covid 0 policy, which the government says is mandatory for the elderly and the medical system, the country’s capital on Saturday reported an increase in cases.
Beijing reported 36 new symptomatic cases, up from seven the day before, and 25 new asymptomatic cases, up from just one the day before.
Bar group
On Thursday, the capital began tightening some covid restrictions again, with at least two communities, adding its largest population, Chaoyang, ending some entertainment venues after a surge in a colorful community known for its nightlife, department stores and embassy streets.
The cases were related to a beverage status quo known as Heaven Supermarket Bar. Since then, infections have risen, with Beijing saying on Saturday that the 61 new cases discovered in the city on Friday had visited the bar or had links to it.
So far, a total of 69 bar-related cases have been reported, with other people affected in 14 of Beijing’s 16 districts, plunging the city of another 22 million people into a state of anxiety.
Beijing had eased widespread covid restrictions imposed to combat a primary outbreak that began in April less than two weeks ago.
With the resurgence of Covid, the sprawling Universal Beijing Resort on Friday night cancelled a reopening plan and said it would remain closed until further notice. Three of its workers had to go to the bar, according to Beijing authorities.
In total, mainland China reported 210 new coronavirus cases by June 10, of which they were symptomatic and 131 asymptomatic, the National Health Commission said on Saturday.

There were no new deaths, leaving the number of deaths in the country at 5,226. As of Friday, mainland China had shown 224,659 with symptoms.
