The weekly Infoinfluenza newsletter – published through the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) – shows accumulation of COVID-19 cases in severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) registries. The scenario is observed in all regions of the country. In 15 of Brazil’s 27 states, there is a trend toward accumulation in long-term instances.

SARS is a respiratory complication that requires hospitalization and is related to worsening a viral infection. The patient may experience shortness of breath and a drop in oxygen saturation point, among other symptoms.

Updated knowledge shows that in the last 4 epidemiological weeks, COVID-19 was connected with 61. 8% of SARS cases with positive effects for some viral infections. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) accounted for 16. 3% and influenza A for 6. 2%. However, hunting only in SARS cases that progressed to death, 93. 3% were related to COVID-19.

A total of 267,226 cases of SARS were already reported in the country in 2022. Fiocruz researchers proposed resuming the use of an adequate mask in conditions of maximum exposure, such as in public transport, closed or poorly ventilated places, crowds and gyms. According to them, the updated vaccination is to decrease the threat of worsening COVID-19.
