LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) – Serena Williams calms down on a more dramatic comeback than some might have expected, even after a long break.
Williams needed to recover to win on his return from a six-month break, beating American Bernarda Pera 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of Tuesday’s Top Seed Open.
Williams completed a second-round showdown on Thursday opposite her older sister Venus, who sent Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 6-2. The two will meet for the 31st time in an attack that proves to be an emotional and physical challenge for both of them.
“From a (winner) of Grand Slam, from one No. 1 to another,” said Venus Williams, who has a 12-18 victory over her sister. ‘It’s been a draw for me but, honestly, it’s very productive because I don’t play forever. So I need to play with the most productive players. And I think I’ve fulfilled my wish. Here we are.
Serena first had to triumph over sporting obstacles opposed to Pera in the first attack on centre court.
Seeking to regain physical form after the breakup caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the 23-time Grand Slam champion worked for her fourteenth defeat to an opponent ranked outdoors as the 50 most sensitive. Williams, ninth, fought temporarily after a promising start as Pera, ranked 60th, broke his love in game five in the direction of a first-set victory.
“I knew it had to be better,” Williams said. “I knew it could be better. And it’s an attractive game. He had so many winners and () so weak. I had to get a little used to a game. She played really well.
Williams needed to come back to win the next attack before getting a break won with effort to force a third set. He drove from there to beat Pera 3-1, then emptied the next game to two and sealed the fit with break.
Williams took 2 hours and 16 minutes to get to another day on a occasion when players hope to hone their hard-court skills for this month’s US Open in New York. She is excited to start after the long break and progressed by keeping her calm under stress.
Pear was not inspired by Williams’ CV or star force in their first encounter. The left-hander broke Williams’ love of a 3-2 merit about to take the first set. Williams gave the impression of turning his left ankle and fell on his back in a return, wasting the point and the next game.
She had stumbled but controlled to re-stand and serve her.
Venus Williams had a lot of time opposing Azarenka on a star-studded Tuesday. The seven-time slam champion was leading 4-0 at the time before splitting the last four games to claim her first four-try win this year.
The 16-year-old ascender Coco Gauff moved on to the next by defeating Caroline Dolehide, 7-5, 7-5.
“I played quite freely and it wasn’t so bad,” said Gauff, who showed some nerves before the game.

In matches, Catherine Bellis beat compatriot Francesca di Lorenzo, a last-minute replacement for Russia’s 6-1, 6-2 seed russia’s Amanda Anisimova. Anisimova retired Tuesday morning with a right shoulder injury.
Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, 5th seed, beat Australian Ajla Tomljanovic 6-0, 6-4. Swiss Jill Teichmann beat the Russian qualifier Anna Kalinskaya, 6-2, 7-5. And Anna Blinkova of Russia beat American Kristie Ahn 6-2, 4-6, 3-1 (retired).
