Secretary-General Marija Pejčinović Burić appreciates Armenia’s cooperation with the Council of Europe | ARMENPRESS Armenian News Agency

EREVAN, JUNE 17, ARMENPRESS. In the 21 years of its accession to the Council of Europe, Armenia has demonstrated its determination to cooperate with the organization, Council of Europe Secretary-General Marija Pejčinović Burić said at a joint press conference with Armenia’s foreign minister. Ararat Mirzoyan in Yerevan.

“Armenia has signed and ratified 66 conventions and acceded to 12 agreements. During those years, Armenia has actively contributed to the creation of Europe’s political and legal agenda. I am sure that the Council of Europe, in turn, has contributed to the progress of reforms in Armenia. “I hope that this scale will expand the point of discussion and cooperation between Armenia and the Council of Europe in light of existing and long-term programs,” said the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

He welcomed the Armenian government’s willingness to put into effect the 2019-2022 Action Plan for Armenia. He said that lately they are preparing the 2023-2026 Action Plan for Armenia.

“In this regard, I urge Armenia to continue to make full use of experience and the Council of Europe, for example, to finalize electoral reforms by aligning them with the recommendations of the Venice Commission, as well as the Media Law and recommendations for constitutional reforms,” he said.

Regarding the agreement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe said that meetings between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, as well as statements on this subject, for example on the paintings of the Delimitation Commission, are welcome.

“We will have to manage to accept them as true and reconciling. All projects in that direction are welcome and will have to be supported,” he said.
