Russian fishing crews suspected of being at the center of a covid outbreak at an isolation facility tested negative and spent 14 days isolating themselves at home before boarding a charter flight to New Zealand, according to one of those employing them.
The Ministry of Health has shown that 11 other people tested positive for the virus at the Hotel Sudima in Christchurch and that another 14 cases are being investigated after regime tests on the third day.
It is understood that the Russian and Ukrainian fishing crews who arrived in the country last Friday are visitors to the hotel lately locked up.
Checkpoint asked for interviews with MIQ Minister Megan Woods, Health Director Dr. Ashley Bloomfield, Health Minister Chris Hipkins, MIQ Air Commodore Webb Operations Manager, and Hotel Sudima Director, but all refused.
In a statement, the Ministry of Health said: “Controlled isolation and quarantine can verify that the facility is configured to respond and is working with local fitness authorities. “
“This is an example of our well-controlled quarantine and isolation system. We have planned it and are confident in our systems. As a precautionary measure, the assets have been closed with the confined visitors in their rooms while the quarantine arrangements are carried out.
