Federally funded scientists proposed a long-term definition of Covid on known symptoms in a giant study published Thursday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The definition is based on 12 symptoms that maximally separate other people with long-term covid six months or more after their infection from others who have not had coronavirus.
Since the early days of the pandemic, many other people have suffered a myriad of debilitating symptoms that persist long after they have become inflamed with covid-19.
Patients have long followed Covid. Scientists call the condition post-acute sequelae, or PASC.

But there is still no systematic and universally accepted definition of long covid for research, and that can serve as a basis for long-term teams to diagnose the disease.
“It’s about looking for a specific, concrete, and reproducible definition for long covid,” said the author of the exam, Dr. Anna S. Simpson. Leora Horwitz, professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
The National Institutes of Health-funded evaluated nearly 10,000 participants at 85 hospitals, gyms and network centers in 33 states.
More than 8,600 patients who had covid went to more than 1,100 who did not have the virus.
The studies are part of the NIH’s large $1. 15 billion RECOVER studies initiative that aims to describe the long Covid, causes of the disease and expand remedies for it. RECOVER stands for COVID Research to Improve Recovery.
The symptoms that stood out most among participants with long Covid included loss of smell and taste, general post-exercise malaise, chronic cough, mental confusion, thirst, palpitations, chest pain, fatigue, adjustments in sex drive, dizziness, gastrointestinal problems, movement, and hair loss.
The scientists rewarded questions based on the extent to which symptoms highlighted participants with long covid from those who had not contracted the virus.
A player who has 12 problems or more is likely to have a long Covid.
Loss of smell and taste and post-exercise discomfort, for example, stood out more than other symptoms, scoring 8 and 7 points, respectively. Palpitations and dizziness, which are characteristic of the long covid, but are also not unusual symptoms in many other conditions, scored 2 numbers and 1 point respectively.
Horwitz, of the study, said the proposed definition of long covid could help expand an approach for doctors to diagnose patients.
But Horwitz said the definition presented in the study is a preliminary definition, still wants to be subtle and is not yet in conditions for clinical use.
In the absence of a universally accepted definition, many long-standing Covid patients have struggled to get physical care, especially early in the pandemic, as some symptoms are not unusual for other conditions, which can make diagnosis difficult.
There is no test to diagnose a long covid based on markers in the blood. RECOVER scientists are trying to understand the underlying biology that causes long covid, which could potentially lead to such tests in the future.
Horwitz said the proposed definition could only help create a rubric for diagnosing long-term covid patients in a similar way to lupus. patient has the disease.
Horwitz said the purpose is to give researchers a more systematic definition that can be used to answer questions about the threat points and most likely duration of Covid after repeated infection and among other variants of the virus, among other issues.
According to the study, biological samples from patients who evolved for a long time with the Covid study can only be used to investigate the causes of the disease and potentially help find treatments and enroll consultants in long-term clinical trials.
The study also found that long covid was not unusual in other inflamed people before the omicron variant spread across the United States in December 2021.
Approximately 17% of patients who were enrolled more than 30 days after omicron infection developed prolonged covid. In contrast, about 35% of other people became inflamed before the omicron era and developed long covid.
But patients who were reinfected with omicron were more likely to develop long covid than those who reported an infection when the variant increased. About 21% of other people with repeated infections who registered after 30 days developed a long covid, compared to 16% who hit Covid once.
Fully vaccinated people were less likely to develop a long covid, regardless of when they became infected.
About 16% of participants who were up-to-date on their injections and who had inflamed omicron developed prolonged Covid, compared to 22% who did not inject. Before omicron, 31% of other people a day on their vaccines who have inflamed evolved a long Covid, compared to 37% who were unvaccinated.
