The scientists admitted that the theory of the Covid lab leak had been downplayed and augmented because researchers feared the Chinese government’s reaction.
Privileged communications from scientists running on a paper rejecting the accusation of lab leakage reveal that researchers were involved in Chinese officials’ reaction to the theory.
The instant messages were collected through a U. S. House of Representatives subcommittee. Now they have the extent of panic among experts.
Among them, University of Edinburgh biologist Dr. Andrew Rambaut, co-author of the March 2020 study paper titled The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2.
The authors claimed that those who believed in the lab leak theory were conspiracy theorists and racists.

Dr. Rambaut’s messages, the Daily Mail reports, showed how terrified he was of blaming China for “even the accidental release” of COVID-19, as it would spark a political “spectacle. “
Instead, Dr. Rambaut said he “contented himself with characterizing it as an herbal process,” he listened to the Select Committee on the Coronavirus Pandemic in Washington, D. C.
Dr. Kristian Andersen, a Danish biologist and co-author of the paper, said he “strongly agreed” with Dr. Rambaut’s assessment.
He added: “While I hate it when politics is injected into science, it is not, especially given the circumstances. “

During the hearing, doctors concerned about COVID-19 in its early days were interviewed to see how the virus entered the world.
House Republicans found that new communications between scientists in early 2020 were evidence of a cover-up, a claim refuted by the scientists involved.
Documents released before the hearing indicated that some scientists researching the virus sought more time to review the lab leak allegation, but that request was rescinded.
Dr. Andersen and Dr. Robert Garry, some other co-authors, made the impression at the committee hearing and defended the publication of the paper and the claims it contains.
In some other internal message, Dr. Andersen wrote on February 4, 2020, that his ideals about the origin of COVID-19 had changed, writing, “The main wild theories circulating lately are that this virus is designed with intention and obviously it is not. “the case. “
