SAVANNAH and ATLANTA, Georgia – August 3, 2020 – The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has partnered with the famous artist Carrie Mae Weems to launch a critical public art initiative to raise awareness of critical fitness in COVID-19 and how racial inequalities have manifested themselves in the pandemic, and others of color are at greatest risk. The artist’s project, RESIST COVID / TAKE 6!, cites the precaution of keeping others two meters away from each other and bears witness to the urgency of Weems’s call to action.
Weems began painting on this new assignment this spring as a resident artist at Syracuse University, as the extent of the COVID-19 crisis has become apparent. The concept arose from a verbal exchange between Weems and his close friend Pierre Loving, lamenting what they saw unfolding.
“The arts allow us to get closer to our humanity,” says Carrie Mae Weems. “One of the vital things is to perceive the cases in which we live. It means unmasking inequality, because then you start to see the strength structures underneath to allow you to beat others instead of looking for the source of the problems. “
In addition to a presentation at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, RESIST COVID / TAKE 6! it will also be visual in SCAD Atlanta. A series of billboards and giant bus canopies brings its message to the attention of citizens of one of the country’s hardest-hit cities. Flyers, church enthusiasts and bags will be distributed through Meals on Wheels Atlanta and local organizations in Savannah. Printed exhibits will direct the public to local resources, adding COVID-19 verification sites.
The works show the realities of the fitness crisis abroad while offering thank-you notes to fitness and service personnel and making direct calls to others to take preventive protective measures.
SCAD has more than a decade of friendship with Weems. The artist has collaborated with the university on exhibitions and projects to show his dynamic work. Weems was a prominent guest professor at SCAD Atlanta and worked with academics on a challenging film, “Building The Story: A Requiem to Mark the Moment,” for the National Black Arts Festival in 2008. In 2016, Weems was the SCAD DEFINE Honoré ART and key speaker. That same year, he had a companion exhibition entitled “Carrie Mae Weems: Considered” at the SCAD Museum of Art at the Walter O. Evans Center for African American Studies.
More recently, Weems spoke to SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace for her podcast ”On Creativity”, where the artist discussed recent and future work, the importance of RESIST COVID/TAKE 6! initiative and its legacy in the industry.

Awareness of critical health, but highlights how this pandemic has disproportionately affected black, Latino and Aboriginal communities,” says SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace. “We are very happy to marry long-time SCAD friend Carrie Mae Weems to bring these vital paintings to Atlanta and Savannah.
Weems hopes to resist COVID/TAKE 6! will have an effect on their immediate messages and a wider discussion about the pandemic and the long-term status of those most affected. This initiative is also active in several locations in the country, adding New York, Detroit, Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia, to help produce collaborators, THE OFFICE performing arts and film.
