Saudi Arabia to compensate some 10,000 displaced OFWs

BANGKOK, Thailand — The Saudi government will pay unpaid refunds to about 10,000 Filipino employees (OFWs) who worked there for structural corporations that went bankrupt in 2015 and 2016, Migrant Workers Department Secretary Susan Ople said Friday.

The Saudi government, Ople said, will allocate 2 billion riyals or 30. 5 billion pesos for unpaid wages.

“The crown prince, His Royal Highness, announced and said it was his gift – he had it ready and it was a deal made through the Saudi government just a few days ago,” Ople said in a statement.

The Chair, for his part, welcomed the progress.

“Napakagandang balita talaga. In pinaghandaan talaga tayo nor Crown Prince. Kaya’t sabi niya ‘yung desisyon na’ yan ay nangyari lamang noong nakaraang ilang araw at dahil nga magkikita kami at sabi niya ito ‘yung gift ko para sa inyo,” the president said in the same statement.

(This is smart news and the crown prince has ready for us. That is why, he said, this resolution has only been taken in the last few days because we will meet. He said it would be his gift to us. )

The Saudi government, Marcos said, also guaranteed that the incident would not return OFWs bound for the kingdom.

“Sila misma magbibigay ng aseguramiento kung sakali mangyari ulit ‘yan na malugi’ yung korporasyon na tinatrabahuhan nila et hindi nila makuha ang kanilang sahod, ‘yung aseguramiento magbabayad. Then marami rin talagang tinutulong in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” Marcos said.

(They will give the guarantee in case it happens that the corporations are bankrupt and the OFWs cannot get their salary, the insurance will pay for it. So, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is helping us a lot. )
