Cairo: Some 5. 3 million worshippers flocked in a single week to the Prophet’s Mosque, Islam’s second-holiest site, in the Saudi city of Medina, according to the state-owned company investigating the site.
The Agency for the Presidency of the Prophet’s Mosque said it gained 5. 3 million worshippers and visitors in the first week of the current fifth Islamic month of Jumada I.
Among them, 135,242 worshippers offered prayers at Al Rawda Al Sharifa, where the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is located.
Visitors to Al Rawda Al Sharifa must make a reservation in advance before arriving at the respected and provided according to the scheduled appointment.
During the same week, 16,772 worshippers benefited from services reserved for the elderly at the mosque and another 37,578 used a multilingual communication service, the company said in a detailed report.
In addition, they distributed 119,400 bottles of Zamzam holy water to the faithful and 92,008 meals on an empty stomach.
After performing the rites of Umrah or a small pilgrimage to the Grand Mosque, Islam’s holiest site in Mecca, many pilgrims flocked to the Prophet’s Mosque and to pray at Al Rawdah Al Sharifa.
Saudi Arabia expects around 10 million foreign Muslims to participate in Umrah in the current season.
The Umrah season began more than four months ago after the completion of the annual Islamic Hajj pilgrimage in which around 1. 8 million Muslims participated for the first time in three years after pandemic restrictions were lifted.
Muslims, who are physically and economically unable to perform the Hajj, travel to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah.
