Doha, Qatar: Saudi Arabia announced the detection of JN. 1, a subvariant of Covid-19 that is experiencing a resurgence in all countries during the winter.

In an article on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, the Saudi Ministry of Health wrote that it is “locally monitoring the immediate spread of the JN. 1 variant,” where 36% of cases were of this variant. He further added that this is not accompanied by any increase in ICU admissions.

In another post, the authority reassured that there is no truth to the risks and warnings being circulated about a new epidemic, “as the JN.1 variant is considered one of the branching variants of Covid-19”.

It further confirmed that the effectiveness of immunization with the developed Covid-19 vaccine is still valid and there is no reason for concern and there is no need to apply strict measures.

The health authority also recommends that other people turn to trusted official resources for information.

JN. 1 is the fastest-growing variant over the past two years. The World Health Organization on Tuesday named it a hot variant because of its immediate spread and potential to increase the burden of the respiratory virus in the Northern Hemisphere. The newest booster formulas are expected to offer coverage against this virus, according to the organization.
