Santa Barbara County Extends Public Relations Firm Contract for COVID-19 Response and Website Updates

The Santa Barbara County Department of Public Health hired a public affairs firm to update its COVID-19 data and create awareness materials, and the Oversight Board on Tuesday extended that contract through mid-2023.

The county has had a COVID-19 reaction contract with Stacy Miller Public Affairs since July 2020, and the company primarily helped create and update the publicfitnesssbc. org online page, said acting director of public fitness Daniel Nielson. The online page created to consolidate data on the county’s COVID-19 pandemic response.

On Tuesday, county supervisors voted 4-1 to approve $31,500 for another nine months of work, through June 30, 2023, for a contract amount exceeding $382,000.

The publicfitnesssbc. org pages on vaccination, check providers and the knowledge board are the most visited on the site, public fitness said Tuesday. There have been 23,000 exclusive visitors to the site in the last 90 days.

“Our goal over time we’re buying with the extension is to figure out how to make these paintings in-house,” Nielson said.

County supervisors in favor of the contract said it is a vital network resource.

Fourth District Supervisor Bob Nelson opposed the expansion because he believes public fitness and the county as a whole are moving to a lower, more sustainable COVID-19 response level.

The Department of Public Health stopped posting knowledge updates about COVID-19 on its websites in July.

That’s when the county switched to a new dashboard that incorporates charts from the California Department of Public Health that releases local knowledge, such as the number of instances by geographic area, age group and vaccination status.

Supervisors also approved a six-month contract with public affairs company Stacy Miller for $102,000 for “general communications services,” while the county hired a new communications manager/public data officer to update Gina DePinto, who left in March.

The new head of public is Kelsey Gerckens Buttita, lead meteorologist for KEYT, which begins Nov. 1, the county announced last month.
