FARMINGTON — New coronavirus cases rose 8. 5 in New Mexico in the week ending Sunday as the state added 6,717 cases. Last week, there were 6,188 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

New Mexico ranked seventh among the states where the coronavirus spread the fastest, according to a study by Johns Hopkins University’s USA TODAY knowledge network.

San Juan County last week reported 520 and seven deaths. A week earlier it had reported 572 and two deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 44,505 and 792 deaths.

In New Mexico, the worst weekly outbreaks per user occurred in Grant County with 511 cases per 100,000 per week; Lincoln County with 450; and San Juan County with 419. The Centers for Disease Control says the network’s highest levels of transmission start at 100 instances per 100,000 per week.

Bernalillo County, with 2,216 instances, added the most new instances overall; the county of Doña Ana, with 703 instances; and San Juan County, with 520. Number of weekly instances higher in 19 counties than last week. The worst increases from last week’s speed occurred in Bernalillo, Doña Ana and Sandoval counties.

“Across New Mexico, cases fell in 12 counties, with the most productive declines in Los Alamos County, from 70 cases to 132 the week before; in San Juan County, with 520 out of 572 cases; and the county of Valencia, with 205 out of 245 instances. ​

In New Mexico, another 93 people were reported to have died from COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. Last week, another 17 people died and deaths were reported. This can particularly skew comparisons from week to week.

A total of another 577,583 people in New Mexico have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and another 8,056 people have died from the disease, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, another 89,542,107 people tested positive and 1,023,799 other people died.

Over the past week, coronavirus cases in the U. S. have been reported. The U. S. census has 29 higher than last week, with 947,862 cases reported. With 0. 63 of the country’s population, New Mexico recorded 0. 71 of the country’s cases last week. Nationwide, 42 states had more cases in the week beyond than in the week beyond.
