The crowd seemed to start whistling the set moment after Medvedev threw his racquet as Dimitrov recovered.

“I’m going to play when the whistle blows,” Medvedev shouted at the referee. The referee then gave Medvedev some recommendations on how to counteract the noise from the spectators.

“The more we stop, the more it bothers them and they whistle,” the referee said.

Medvedev doubled down and conceded to the crowd.

“They’re stupid. If you don’t whistle, I’ll play,” Medvedev replied before telling spectators: “I’m playing, guys, but keep your mouth shut, okay?”

“When I throw my racquet, I have the right to be whistled. It’s a bad reaction,” Medvedev said. On the other hand, if I’m serving and they’re whistling and clapping at the same time, it’s a bit weird.

“It’s Bercy’s audience. Everyone knows that. I played a lot more in Bercy when there was no one around,” he said, referring to gambling at the sports complex during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Here, with me, it doesn’t connect. I’ll go back and check it to make it as good as possible. “

Medvedev downplayed the idea that he had deliberately made the obscene gesture toward the crowd, saying, “I’m looking for my fingernail. How can I do that in front of the friendly crowd in Paris-Bercy?”
