Russian forces withdraw from Kharkiv as Ukraine launches counteroffensive

SLOVIANSK, Ukraine – Ukrainian forces have damaged Russia’s front lines to the east, retaking strategic cities and territories in a wonderful counteroffensive that began just a few days ago.

Ukrainian officials claim to have retaken some 270 square miles and the key towns of Izium, Balakliya and Kupiansk, all of which have been controlled by Russian forces for months.

In a video posted on Telegram, Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, records from Balakliya, the Ukrainian flag hoisted appearing. This is one of many social media posts purporting to feature photos and videos of recently released Ukrainians celebrating recent achievements. .

Izium Deputy Mayor Volodymyr Matsokin showed in a Telegram article that the Ukrainian armed forces were in the city, but said it was too early to say the city had been liberated. She says the army is running on her.

In his speech on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that more than 30 settlements in Kharkiv had been “liberated” so far.

While the Russian Defense Ministry and the Kremlin officially identified the counteroffensive, Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov showed that Moscow’s forces withdrew from the city of Izium, a regional transportation and origin hub for the Russian military in eastern Ukraine.

“. . . to liberate Donbass, it was to regroup Russian troops in the Balakliya and Izium region to accentuate efforts towards Donetsk,” Konashenkov said in a video, even as Russian state media journalists on the floor insisted that the resolution was taken to prevent a defeat of Ukrainian forces.

Videos posted on social media showed long lines of cars piled up on the Russian border after the government requested a civilian evacuation.

Recent research through the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington, D. C. -based tank, said the successes of Kharkiv’s counteroffensive “create cracks in the Russian data space” and “erode trust” in the Russian command.
