Admiral Gorshkov is expected to perform a Zircon hypersonic missile, the first such launch in a foreign exercise, state media Tass reports. The Zircon hypersonic missile can penetrate any missile defense to hit targets at sea and on land, according to Russia.

The exercises are scheduled to last 10 days and will coincide until February 24, the first anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.

South Africa’s resolution to participate in the drills has sparked controversy, with the opposition party saying it demonstrates its approval of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Kobus Marais, the Democratic Alliance’s shadow defense minister, questioned the motives for the plan’s implementation, calling it “another bad judgment, a disgrace. “

South African military officials said the “multinational maritime exercise” will “strengthen the already flourishing relationship between South Africa, Russia and China. “
