Russian state news firm Tass and independent media outlet Mediazona first reported on Sunday that Stone had been included on the list, weeks after the Russian government in October classified Meta as a “terrorist and extremist” organization, paving the way for an imaginable criminal prosecution of Russian citizens who employ its platform.
The Home Office database does not provide the main points of the proceedings against Stone, stating only that he is wanted on criminal charges.
According to Mediazona, an independent news site that covers the opposition and Russia’s criminal system, Stone was placed on the wanted list in February 2022, but the government made no statement about it at the time and no outlets reported on the case until this week.
In March of this year, Russia’s Federal Investigative Committee opened a criminal investigation against Meta. He alleged that the company’s moves following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 amounted to incitement to violence against Russians.
After Russian troops arrived in Ukraine, Stone announced transitory adjustments to Meta’s hate speech policy to allow “forms of political expression that would violate (its) rules, such as violent speech such as ‘death to Russian invaders. ‘”
In the same statement, Stone added that “credible calls for violence against Russian civilians” would be banned.
Mediazona reported Sunday that an unspecified Russian court earlier this month issued an arrest warrant for Stone on charges of “facilitating terrorism. “The report specifies the source of this information, which can be independently verified.
