Ukraine sent reinforcements to its northern border on Friday after Russian forces tried to break through Ukrainian lines in several sections, applying fresh pressure to forces already stretching along a 600-mile front.

Russian attacks began Friday at around 5 a. m. with heavy aerial bombardment of Ukrainian positions followed by armored columns seeking to break through at several points along the border, according to a report by the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

“For the time being, these attacks have been repelled and fighting of varying intensity continues,” the ministry said. “Reserve units have been deployed for defense in this sector of the front. “

The scale and intent of Russian incursions on the border remain unclear. Military analysts have said Russia is possibly seeking to force Ukraine to devote valuable resources to protecting the region, just as Russian attacks in eastern Ukraine are intensifying.
