Russian investigators said Thursday they had arrested a French national in Moscow on suspicion of gathering intelligence on the activities of the Russian military, adding to a list of foreigners detained in the country since the invasion of Ukraine.

The official Russian news firm TASS knew the arrested individual, citing its police sources, as Laurent Vinatier. The firm said Vinatier was hired as a representative at the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue, a nonprofit founded in Switzerland.

On its website, the center states that its project is to “prevent armed conflicts around the world through mediation and quiet diplomacy. “

In response to a request for comment, they showed that Mr. Vinatier worked as an adviser and that he had been detained in Russia.

“We are working to download more important points about the cases and offload Laurent’s release,” the outlet said.

Vinatier has been running for the nonprofit since 2014 as an advisor on its Russia/Eurasia program, according to his LinkedIn profile. Among his tasks he cited “facilitating meetings” and “transmitting messages”. He has also worked as a threat advisor, researcher and lecturer in schools and institutes, with Russia being his main focus.
