Romania’s Foreign Ministry said Sunday that a tourist from the country was killed in a shark attack while on vacation in Egypt, making it the moment a shark attack dies in recent days.
A 68-year-old Austrian woman died Friday after losing an arm and leg in a Mako shark attack while swimming in the Red Sea near the Hurghada city hotel. Local Egyptian media widely reported on the death of a momentary woman following a shark attack on Sunday.
The Romanian Foreign Ministry said it is being executed to identify the victim, inform the circle of relatives and see the repatriated framework.
On Saturday, the Egyptian government closed off part of the Red Sea coast after the Austrian woman’s death. They banned water activities such as diving, snorkeling, windsurfing and kite flying. Fishing boats were also banned in the waters of Hurghada.
A video posted online claims to show the attack that killed the Austrian woman, near the coast, observed from a nearby pier. In the video, the water around the swimmer turns red due to blood as passers-by on the dock throw a flotation device towards her. It is still unclear how he was able to succeed on the shore.
Shark attacks have been rare in Egypt’s Red Sea coastal region in recent years. In 2020, a Ukrainian boy lost an arm and an Egyptian excursion consultant lost a leg in a shark attack. In 2010, a series of shark attacks killed a European hiker. and mutilated several more off Sharm el-Sheikh on the Sinai Peninsula, across the Red Sea from Hurghada.
Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, in addition to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, are among the country’s most sensitive beach destinations and are popular with European tourists.
A spokeswoman for Egypt’s ministry declined to comment when asked about the timing of the death.
Authorities have sought in recent years to revive the important tourism sector, hit by years of instability and, more recently, by the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
