Romania plans to hold parliamentary elections on 6 December, Prime Minister Ludovic Orban announced on Thursday (3 September), with a vote on whether the country is turning the page on recent political instability.

The polls, which are expected to win Orban’s PPE-affiliated Liberal National Party (NLP) through analysts, are expected to be positioned despite the dangers of coronavirus.

“Given our legislation, the only date to hold the election is December 6,” orban, 57, head of the LNP, said at the start of a government assembly on Thursday.

Relatively unscathed since the start of the global coronavirus pandemic, Romania recently experienced an increase in infections in an average of about 1,200 new cases a day, and pollsters did not know what the disease will look like in the vote in December.

The economy of one of the poorest members of the European Union contracted by 12. 3% at the time of the year due to the effect of Covid-19 on business and consumption.

The traditionally dominant Social Democratic Party (PSD) won the 2016 parliamentary elections with a landslide, but its government was expelled last year after being tarnished by corruption allegations and mass street protests over debatable judicial reforms.

On Monday, Orban’s minority survived a distrust movement in the PSD parliament due to a lack of quorum.
