BUCHAREST – The number of new coronavirus infections in Romania has risen to 1,713 in days, a record, bringing the cumulative total to 107,011 cases, the government announced on Wednesday.
Since the outbreak began in February, another 4,285 people have died and about 50,000 have recovered.
President Klaus Iohannis ordered a strict closure across the country of another 20 million people in March and, restrictions have been relaxed, the mask is mandatory on public transport and indoor public spaces since 15 May.
Approximately a third of the instances were concentrated in 4 spaces: the capital Bucharest, the medieval Transylvanian city of Brasov and the counties of Arges and Prahova.
The peaks were the fastest in Europe, along with Spain, France, Malta, Croatia and the Czech Republic, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
The government reopened schools for 2. 8 million young people on Monday after a six-month closing and ordered students to wear face masks.
