Rolls-Royce SMR welcomes UK-Poland agreement

Rolls-Royce SMR has welcomed the agreement between Polish trade organisation Industria and UK-based Chiltern Vital to collaborate on foreign projects to deliver low-carbon Rolls-Royce SMR energy technology.

In 2023, after working with Rolls-Royce SMR for more than two years, Industry decided on Rolls-Royce’s generation of small modular reactors to meet the zero-emission energy targets of the Hydrogen Central Cluster in Poland and as a component of its plans to produce 50,000 tonnes of energy. Low-carbon hydrogen every year.

CVG, one of the UK’s leading multi-sector project developers, recently put forward itself as the preferred bidder for the acquisition of South Gloucestershire’s Gloucester Science and Technology Park.

Together with its partners (which include Western Gateway, SGSC, the University of Bristol, Vital Energi and Rolls Royce SMR), CVG intends to create the world’s first nuclear and generation-0 campus. This will be the first step towards a ‘super cluster 0’. investment zone, encouraging the deployment of Rolls-Royce SMR in a diversity of 0 technologies.

Alan Woods, Head of Strategy and Business Development at Rolls-Royce SMR, said: “This is a huge step forward for Rolls-Royce SMR and we are very pleased to see two of our closest partners agree to collaborate in their efforts to bring our generation closer to life.

“This is an exciting development. CVG and Industry are highly capable organisations, capable of delivering low-carbon energy projects powered by Rolls-Royce SMR. This announcement further opens up the opportunity for CVG and enable Great British Nuclear (GBN) to deliver cutting-edge generation in the early to mid-2030s. “

The site, located next to the former Berkeley Magnox Nuclear Power Plant on the banks of the River Severn, is home to Berkeley Laboratories and has been at the forefront of nuclear science and generation for more than 40 years. Berkeley and nearby Oldbury were already among several priority sites in England and Wales that have the potential to host several Rolls-Royce SMR power stations.

After being shortlisted at the end of 2023, Rolls-Royce SMR is committed to moving forward with the GBN generation process. Being announced as a successful bidder later this year will enable rapid investment in the UK supply chain. SMR can build one million homes in the UK over 60 years, delivering clean electricity for generations to come while supporting thousands of highly professional jobs over the long term.

Rolls-Royce’s SMR design is progressing well in the generic design assessment procedure conducted through the UK’s independent nuclear industry regulators and is two years ahead of any other SMR in the European regulatory assessment.
