Right-wing coalition wins elections in Sweden

Sept. 14 (UPI) — Sweden’s prime minister said Wednesday he announced his resignation after his ruling party was defeated by a loose coalition of right-wing parties.

The Sweden Democrats, once marginal, are now the largest political party at the moment in the country.

The electoral crusade is strongly based on policies against immigration and crime.

The final result is still official, pending a recount, a practice not unusual in the Scandinavian nation.

The effects of the elections mark a major shift in the country’s political landscape. The other parties, first, have moved away from the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats when they first entered parliament in 2010.

“The Sweden Democrats have made a decision. We are satisfied with this and, of course, expect the dating between the blocks to be above Wednesday’s tally. Then we are in a position to contribute constructively to a renewal of strength and a new beginning for Sweden,” he added. Swedish Democratic leader Jimmie Akesson wrote on Twitter.
